Misconceptions About Chiropractic

There are two main misconceptions associated with chiropractors and chiropractic care. Let’s address them here:

  1. Chiropractic Care is Only for My Back

As pointed out earlier, chiropractic care can be utilized for many injuries and conditions other than just back pain, including preventative care. The combination of joint manipulation, soft tissue therapy and dynamic stability exercises can be very powerful for a variety of sports injuries and otherwise.

2. Chiropractors only adjust

Nope. Chiropractors can do much more than just adjust. They provide soft tissue therapy like those techniques listed earlier, therapeutic rehabilitation including dynamic stability exercises and functional training, as well as nutritional education.

Emphasizing this integration of therapies, the reinjury rate for hamstring strains in runners drops from 70% to 7.7% just when regular rehabilitation exercises are performed. Think about what would happen if we you also added in regular joint manipulation and muscular therapies as well!

Whole Body Approach

Chiropractic physicians like to take a holistic, whole-body approach to the body. One myth that we need to dispel is that chiropractors are totally against medications, surgery and conventional healthcare. Rather, chiropractors believe there should be a certain approach to healthcare, in the absence of a medical emergency, that begins as conservative and as non-invasive as possible. If that trial of care fails, then we can take the next step to get the patient what they need.

Additionally, the body is so well-designed that one region affects every other region through a closely interwoven system of nerves, muscles, bones and joints (among other tissues). For example, dysfunction in the joints and muscles of the low back can affect the movement, strength and stability of the hip, knee, ankle and foot. The underlying concept should be that pain in one spot may be a result of dysfunction in a different area. This is why chiropractors take the whole-body approach in treating patients.
